Milk or Cola???
Many Americans in these days are trying to lose weight and get in shape.Studies have shown that people are drinking too much sweetened drinks such as coke, sprite and others.Statistics have shown that Americans have drank 4 times more milk than sweet sodas in the middle of the 20th century. Now the ratio almost reversed.Soda is now considered a junk food. The obesity ration has almost doubled for adults and tripled among teenagers. Scientists say that our body will respond to differently to sodas than it would to food. Its pure calories. After we eat a burger a hormone called gherlin will drop, but with sodas in wont. Supposedly drinking sodas will trigger our appetite and raise our blood sugar really fast.People who are trying to lose wait, forget the sweetened sodas and start drinking WATER.

This is a good reminder. I went straight to the kitchen and switched from coffee to water.
I think women's matabolism becomes slower than men's at that magic age of 40.
It's not right!
That's what I did a few years ago, albeit for some larger health issues. Now, all I drink is water and Propel, it has most of the good parts of gatorade w/o the sugar.
Once you get used to not drinking cola all the time, it's really not all that hard to keep up. Just watch out for the caffeine withdraw, it can be bad.
I personally don't drink sodas (with exception of the occasional sprite when my stomach is upset) I don't like the way they make my body feel --I feel jittery and then so tired after a while. I stick to water and sports drinks.
There are so many comments and predictions with milk, water and soda. I remember talking to some of my coworkers that are in there 40's and they said that now there are so many scientists today who say drink at least 8 bottles of water a day. But notice that before bottled water was big no one said anything about drinking a certain amount. So how do we even know any more what is good for us. Some scientists say that water is bad for you and to many nutrients are being drawn out of your body. Scientists have said milk is good and milk is bad who knows how many times. Now it is on to soda. No one knows what is really good and really bad for somebody. I say try a little bit of each for awhile and see which one works and doesnt work for you.
Yeah, I recently read on article on the dangers of drinking all of your calories.. I think a lot of people think they are being healthy and don't even think about the sodas they are drinking. Admittedly, I drink Diet Coke pretty often. But I will usually only let myself have one after I've had mostly water or unsweet tea for the day.
OK, for people drinking a lot of soda there are a lot of health factors in there.
#1. Calories
Your average can of soda is about 150 calories. Calories aren't bad as they are necessary for hormone production and most functions of the body. It's also not just getting more calories than your body is burning but whether they are slow digesting carbs (consistent, long lasting energy that doesn't spike insulin. This keeps metabolism up) or fast digesting carbs (white sugar, white flower etc. which are quickly absorbed beginning as soon as they hit the tongue. These are stored as fat unless used as post workout where they assist in protein synthesis. This is why often people get a sugar rush and then feel drained. Metabolism is unstable and generally much lower). Your sodas have the fast digesting sugars.
#2. Diet Sodas and sweeteners
Studies show that aspartame (Diet Coke) is linked to tumors. Something that is said to be safer is Sucralose (Coke Zero) or Splenda. It is derived from the sweet tasting part of sugar that is 600 times sweeter tasting than the sugar as a whole. Even though it is a carbohydrate, your body passes it through as if it is nothing yet it resembles the taste of sugar very well.
A circulating theory about artificial sweeteners is that you body tastes them and still expects the calories but does not get them. This is also said to slow metabolism.
#3. Caffeine
Yes, caffeine is a drug and can be addictive (withdrawal). Too much caffeine can cause a heart attack but if used sparingly and at the right time ie. 200-400mg in the morning and 200-400mg before a workout it is very effective at burning fat as energy as well as helping maintain focus.
As for water consumption, look at your urine. We get more water than we realize out of the food we eat. If you want your kidneys to be efficient and continue to function then I suggest at least .5 a gallon spread throughout the day for a sedentary person. For someone more active 1 to 1.5 gallons a day. Again, check your urine.
Milk is a good source of protein and carbs. Milk, and even more so, yogurt is great for a late snack because of its slow absorption into the body.
Coke is apart of my everyday life. It's just the type of drink that quenches your thirst and it really does do the trick. One of these days i'm going to have to give coke up but it's not going to be anytime soon!
Up north we call it pop. It is sweet and a great substitute for water. Your info was great. I have been trying to drink more water. I usually carry a water bottle with me daily. However, I have not been quite successful in drinking the whole thing in a day. I will try it today. I'm going to fill up my water bottle now.
I should probably lay off the Mountain Dew knowing those facts... agh, I barely drink any water as is. Better get started..
I personally never really liked soda. This is a good reminder though. Expecially for 'us females!' Good tip :)
I gave up sodas 2 years ago, when I ached all over and had serious cravings for carbs....after going to a few doctors for help I finally found one who realized I started drinking DIET COKE just a year or so before. He explained all the horrible effects that artificial sweetners and colors can do to my body....it scared me to death! I went through withdrawls...and drank a toon of juice and gatorade the first few days but with in a week my cravings were gone and so was my pain. I changed no other lifestyle habits and I lost 20lbs and I feel and look younger! I drink close to 1 gallon of water every day and I ALWAYS get my 2 servings of good cold mayfield milk in.
I believe the cola industry knows just what they are doing....the more they make, the eaisier it is to get...the more will drink....which will make us want more. I save about $30 a week just by avoiding going in the gas station....no more big 44oz drinks for me (along with a little snack and maybe something for the kids)! Those of you wanting to give it up....Go for it! Those of you who think its too hard....just wait, you won't be young and spry forever...it will eventually catch up with you, and if you drink alot of soda each day, it probably already has...just look at yourself :) Thanks for letting me get in on this one...I feel pretty strongly about it.
My doctor told me that moutain dew is the worst soda you can drink, one can a week gives you about 20 extra pounds a year. I thought milk contain high levels of sugar.
I completely agree that water should be our may source of fluid. I myself stay away from sodas and stick to water. It is a lot healthier than the amount of suger intake from sodas.
Matredd,
That's the key to it all, MODERATION! I believe anybody (even people over 40!! ;o) ) can lose weight without completely giving up their favorite foods. Eating/drinking healthy is a lifestyle. All people need to do is change their habits and lifestyles into something positive and healthy.
If my child didn't have a dairy allergy, I would be drinking LOADS of milk... But he does and I am breastfeeding so there goes that!! I love milk and used to constantly drink it every day. I have never had a problem with my weight, except for now I can't seem to keep weight on!! I rarely drink sodas but I do admit I don't drink enough water. My drinks are orange juice, apple juice, pomegranate juice, pomegranate/blueberry juice, and water. All of my juices are 100% juice with no sugar added but I should still be drinking more water!! I don't think America drinks enough water.
I usually stay away from sodas. I prefer water and juice and sometimes iced tea. I agree it's much healthier to stay away from all sugars as it raises the blood sugar. After ingesting sugars, there is a spike in blood sugar, followed by a severe drop, which can make one feel lethargic and tired.
I am a soda freak. It is hard for me to stop drinking sodas even though I know that is not good for me it still taste great. I have cut back alot from 3 a day to 1 a week. So while it is hard to kick the habit. I am tring.
I try to drink mostly water throughout the day. I drink juice in the morning and also with dinner, everything in between is always water. We dont neccesarily have to drink 8 glasses of water a day because alot of the water our takes in comes from other things we eat and drink. Especially if you eat alot of fruits like I do. As far as milk go, I've never been able to drink milk by itself. I have to have cereal in order to drink milk.
I used to only drink soda. After having my son I had to go to water! Now I wouldn't drink one unless it was diet, they are just too sweet.
