Unfair?
I read an article the other day about a couple from Colombia who lived here in the United States for 17 years with their two sons.Immigration offices found out that they were here illegally and tried to send them home to Colombia. After a long battle with government they sent them home without their kids who are still teenagers.Their two sons are going to stay here, get work permits and driver licenses. In my opinion I just don't think it's fair that people who live here that long, work, their kids are born here should be deported. Why didn't all get deported or why didn't they stay?As longest they don't commit crime, pay taxes why not legalize them after 17 years.I just thought this was an interesting topic so I've decided to post it on here:)

I think it's fine for the illegals to stay here (at least the ones who have been here for numerous years) as long as the people that are here go through a process just like the ones who did it legally. My ancestors came here from other countries, but they did it the right, legal way. I think they should pay their back taxes, pay a fine for breaking the law, speak English, and be able to prove they have good work status.
I fully agree with what you are saying. I STRONGLY believe that people who have illegally immigrated here and have been here for a long period of time should be able to stay here. They pay taxes also and when it comes down to what the "real issue" is... American citizens are worried about others living off their tax money. My parents have been here for almost 21 years. One is legal and one is illegal. Both went through the legalization process but one was not of the age during those times. Now they both have 2 professions each, have been paying taxes since they came and have 1 adult and 2 teenagers. It would be highly unfair to send them back after they've worked so hard to come as far as they have. If this decision really made any kind of sense in the eyes of legislature, many 'American' families would be seperated and/or deported.
Good topic.
Families should not be separated. If the kids were born here, the parents should be able to stay. Yes, it's a loophole, but apparently FAMILY VALUES made a bunch of folks electable (is that a word?), and if this isn't a fv issue, I don't know what is.
I agree, separating families is unfair. If the laws to become legal made it easier, there would be less illegal immigrants in the first place. Right now it's practically impossible to become legal even if you wanted to. A typical immigrant looking for work and a better life isn't going to have the money and means to make that happen. I don't understand why Americans get so up in arms about this. ALL of our ancestors emigrated here at one point unless you're a Native American.. Whether it's English, Irish, or whatever. If you want immigrants to be legal and pay taxes.. Then make the laws where they're able to do that.
I do not think the family should be seperated but if it were the law to be able to come here illegally and just multiply, that would be ASKING for overpopulation. The parents and children should have been deported. It's not massively hard to get legal here- we make it pretty easy. They should have thought about what they were doing before they decided on doing it.
I completely agree. This is such a controversal topic. If they were law abiding citizens then why not let them stay? All they were doing was trying to create a better life for themselves and their children.
I agree that if you are here for a certain amount of years and you are working and not comitting any crimes, you should be able to stay here. I think its totally unfair to break up a family like that.
I don't understand. We are all immigrants. Unless you are a Native American Indian, you are or your family was at some time an immigrant. I think that as long as you are working, staying out of trouble, and contributing to the community there shouldn't be a problem!
I agree that they shouldn't have been sent back. Once they have become accustomed to our world they should just be left alone. Especially if they've been paying taxes and their children are citizens of the U.S. This just shows how the world goes round. Illegal aliens are coming over every day and not paying taxes and doing what they should be doing and their still here. NO in my opinion they should have just left them alone.
Agreed. If they have been living here that long, and being just like regular citizens (not committing crimes, etc), they should just be accepted as regulars. Heck, if they can do all that for that long, they'd be better citizens than some current ones.
These situations suck, no doubt about it. Not to play Devil's Advocate here or anything, but there is in fact a reason justice is blind. Slippery slopes of good-intentions laid roads to hell and all that. But back to the issue at hand, the laws right now are hazey and there's a reason for it. It's not just public opinion is split or new rules are counter to 'traditional' american values. Most of the country's workforce is going towards service industry, waiters doctors lawyers salespeople etc etc. But we still need manual laborers for construction, landscaping, cleaning etc. Good hard-working immigrants, the ones we all like and need, aren't above an "honest day's work" so they fill a very big need in our society, and the people in charge know it.
If we didn't have immagration laws, the U.S. would be flooded with millions of people coming here each year. And we would be over crowded. The immagration laws are to simply keep the United States from getting overly crowded. If we let just anyone who wants to be here come over, that would make life on us Americans a lot harder. Finding a job would be difficult, and so would be finding a home. Then you say, "Well we can build more houses, and come up with more jobs!", and I call you a moron. To do that would be to tear more forests and enviornment. Before you know it, trees would be extinct! There are so many things that could go wrong if we get over populated. I think we should be a 25 foot wall around the whole U.S.
Fair.
I think the reason that they were deported and not their children as well, is because their children were born here(they inherited citizenship through birth) and the parents were never citizens.
I do not believe what happened is unfair though. I believe it is a sad story, it is always bad to see those things happen and I think that U.S. officials could of did some compromising. However, when you break the law(by coming here illegally) and then do not make the effort to correct it after 17 years(which is a ample amount of time to get on track to citizenship) then personally I feel you need to suffer by the justice system. For 17 years they lived off of U.S. citizen tax paying dollars, for many resources and then had children that they knew would be born into citizeship. I believe the fact of the matter is when you break the law you need then be a product of the justice system.(Don't like it? Appeal. Still Don't like it? then move somewhere else; in reference to those who break the law knowingly*)
Every Choice and Action has a consequence(good or bad) and knowingly breaking the law is a Choice. They made the choice of breaking the law by coming here illegally and they recieved the consrquences for it(it just happend 17 years later). The ironic things is we are saying it is unfair that individuals that break the law get deported. I say it is unfair to those who sit in line and wait years to get in the country the legal way, the right way. To see someone come here illegally and not go through the legal provisions and get away with it, is a slap in the face to those who do it the right way(It unfair to them!)
