Saggy pants ordinance...
When I heard about this, I thought it was a joke! The city of Atlanta is trying to control saggy pants! Instead of spending money on lowering crime or helping out our valiant police force and Fire fighters, they are going to become fashion police. I don't like saggy pants, but I don't think it should be Atlanta's job to stop it. I think it should be the parents. What do you think?

How would you enforce something like that? lol I doubt anyone would pay any attention to it. There's no way that ordinance would pass. I can see making dress code rules in schools like that or something.. But not for people just walking down the street. Crazy!
I think high schools have given up. The last time I entered one, FASHION HAD CHANGED. If there was a dress code, I couldn't see what it was saying no to.
Did your high schools have a dress code? Was it enforced?
I think that's pretty said. The money to pass that law could be spent onchild abuse prevention or given to homeless shelters. I did not realize saggy pants were such a problem here. If that is the case what about the girls I see walking around with their thongs hanging out of their low riders. Shouldn't their be a law for that?
That is just seriously stupid. In my high school, the most the teachers could do about saggy pants was complain or tell them to pull their pants up, but the kids hardly listened. If people that have direct contact with the people in saggy pants can't even control it, why does the government think they can?
It is a shame that this is what our government would rather spend their money on. The money to past that law could be spent on child abuse prevention or be given to the homeless. If that is the case why not make a law for women who walk around with their thongs hanging out of their low riders.
I think that whoever came up the whole saggy pants/bra straps ordinance thing is full of it. Every generation has a fad they go. It is only a form of expression. I am neither for nor against saggy pants. The police is spending all of this money on controlling what we wear when they need to handle some of the crime going on here in Dekalb Co. The crime rate is steadily rising.
My high school did have a dress code and it was enforced... Sleevless tops had to be the width of three fingers, shorts/skirts were to be an inch longer than your longest finger.. You couldn't dye your hair crazy colors. By my senior year they banned rebel flags on clothing (A big deal in Loganville. lol).. But I thought the funniest thing was that we weren't allowed to wear anything Satanic, etc.. Our school mascot was the Red Devil! It was plastered all over everything.. Talk about irony. ;)
Yeah, that sounds like a joke. I mean what are they going to do, give everybody tickets for their pants being to low. The police need to worry about other thing than fashion.
I ride the MARTA train to work everyday. This wouldn't be such a joke if you had to look at young boys' boxer shorts everyday. I'm sick of it.
When I was in high school the dress code was strictly enforced. I remember being sent home for my shorts not meeting the "fingertip" requirement. And boys were not allow to have their underwear showing!!! I personally do not want to see ANY ONE's underwear, women included. But yet I see it every day!
I think this ordinance is ridiculous though. Why not ban pants that are too tight while we are at it?? There has to be more important issues in the City of Atlanta...
Haha! Leave it to the government, right? I don't see how they could possibly enforce this. I don't enjoy looking at people's underwear, nor do I think it's cute when people have to litterally waddle to keep their pants from falling to their toes but it would go against our constitutional rights for the government to put a dress code on people walking down the street.
My school did have a dress code and it was enforced to a degree. Baggy pants were not allowed yet they never were totally banned. The girls couldn't wear anything that exposed their bras, the boys couldn't wear anything that exposed their underwear, and shorts and skirts had to be fingertip length.
Liz, that's funny about the whole satanic thing being banned and your school mascott being a red devil. Nothing was really banned in our school except clothes that suggested the use of drugs or alcohol. Though, being a dumb kid and pushing the limits, a sweater I had had a skeleton holding a margarita glass in one hand and a cigarette in the other. I never got in trouble for it. I think the teachers and principals scope out the "problem" kids and enforce the rules on them moreso than the rest of the students.
I think it's necessary for schools to have dress codes, otherwise kids take things to the limit. They also focus more attention on what everyone's wearing instead of on academics. Take a look at the test scores of kids at schools where dress codes/uniforms are enforced versus schools where it isn't enforced. I think it's ridiculous however, for a city to try to ban fads or clothing. That would be such a subjective response from a small group of people. Who are they to determine fashion? If they pass this, there's no telling what they'll pass next.
This is one the craziest things that I have ever heard of. This just goes to show that the tax payers money is going to wasted problems. As long as the public isn't walking around naked who cares? I don't!! I also believe that "our" money could be used towards many other things other than this. We have many more problems going on out there in the streets that our laws need to be concerned with. I can't wait to see the outcome of this one. Even though we know what it will be it will still be a good laugh!!
I guess we all agree this is ridiculous! The red devil thing is funny too! At my high school, people were targted as well. Many of my friends would talk about one particular administrator targeting some of them. Certain people would get in trouble while others would not. Did people in your schools get targeted?
that's absurd. They might as well tell us how we should dress. I know that it's not right to sag your pants or have your underwear showing in any way, but it's a style that people choose to wear their clothing. Personally, I don't sag my pants in any way. My pants are at my hips and no where else. Just because some people think it's wrong does not give them the right to judge someone.
I think that this is absoloutly CRAZY!!!! every body has the right to express them selves, through what they are wearing! Hearing about this makes me want to put on baggy pants and let them hang to my knees, while walking down Peachtree Street!!! You can't control what people buy and how they wear it... come on now!
Yea, I heard that. I couldn’t believe my ears either. And along with that, you can get a ticket it your thong is showing ladies! Yes. Your thong. I, like many, dont like the baggy pants, its not attractive, and your butt is hanging out half of the time, but it is not ticket worthy. As for the thong issue, again, its not a great thing to see, but come on, like freedom of speech, we are supposed to be able to were what we want to wear. As long as the private parts are tucked away, what is the problem?
I think that the effort, money, and time should put in more important issues like preventing another Jena 6.
I personally feel that I want my tax money going to something a bit more important and meaningful. Whats next enforcing penalties on girls that where spaghetti strap shirts. Instead of observing and prosecuting people that have saggy pants how about they put the attention too enforcing stricter and harsher laws on rapist, murders and child molesters.
Its true that it will be difficult to control, but I feel that it does need to be done, its affecting the quality of life we all live and I'm glad someone had finally done something to fix the problem. And well if there was financial problems, i'm sure its better to spend it on this than on war.
